About Alexa Szotka, LCMHC- Telehealth Therapist in Vermont and Pennslyvania
You don’t have to carry this all on your own.
If you’ve made it this far, chances are you’ve been pushing through for a long time. Maybe you’ve tried to tell yourself “it wasn’t that bad,” or you’ve blamed yourself for feeling the way you do. But trauma, anxiety, and chronic overwhelm don’t just go away on their own and you deserve more than just surviving.
I’m Alexa (she/her), a Philadelphia based EMDR tele-therapist who specializes in working with women and LGBTQIA+ folks who've experienced trauma, PTSD, or have gone through any sort of painful experience. I am licensed to provide therapy for adult clients in Pennsylvania and Vermont.
I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), because I’ve seen firsthand how life-changing it can be, both for my clients and in my own healing work. EMDR helps your nervous system unlearn those old survival responses so you can feel more present, more grounded, and more like yourself.
In our work together, I’ll meet you with respect, realness, and care. I work from an anti-oppressive lens, which means I understand that our mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Racism, homophobia, transphobia, anti-fat bias, ableism, and other systems of harm affect how we move through the world — and that matters in therapy. I identify as a white, queer, cisgender woman, and these lived identities influence how I show up in the therapy space. This is a place where all parts of you are welcome. You don’t have to shrink yourself here.
I have years of experience working in community mental health, college counseling, and private practice settings. I additionally have my 200hr yoga teacher training certificate from Laughing River Yoga. In my free time, I enjoy spending time in nature with my dog Willoughby, going to Pilates classes with my wife Claudia, cooking, traveling and crafting.
How I work
At the core of my approach to therapy is a belief that under the right conditions everyone is capable of growth and change.
In sessions with me, we will move at a pace that feels right to you. You can expect sessions to include a balance of coping skills building, connection, encouragement, validation, and a dash of humor. My practice is rooted in trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, fat-positive, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and neuro-diversity affirming practices.
Therapy with me is…
-
You are unique, and that means your therapy should be too. You can expect that therapy together will go at you own pace and be focused on your specific goals. I believe you are the expert of your life, and as your therapist I get the honor of being your partner in this therapeutic journey to discover where you want to go.
-
I describe my therapy style as empathetic, validating, and direct. I hope to help clients draw attention to patterns and behaviors that aren’t serving them, so they can begin to make changes that allow them to live a more values-aligned life.
-
You deserve a place where you can show up authentically as you, and feel fully accepted. In our session you will always receive a compassionate presence where you feel respected and believed.
